Where to eat in the Great Falls Area..... Grand Union Hotel in Fort Benton. This is a wonderful old hotel that has been lovingly restored. The food is excellent. It is abut a 45 minute drive from Great Falls (short, by Montana standards). The owner's name is Cheryl and you might find her at the front desk, or hostessing the dining room or doing any other job that needs to be done. The bartender might be local artist Brian Morger (you can tell by the Elvis impersonation). Lots of history in this place. Plan on spending an hour or so taking a walk on the levee and travelling back in time. Web site: www.grandunionhotel.com.
Fly Fisher Inn: Rick and Lynne are friends of ours. Lynne does the cooking and Rick plays the gracious host. This is a private club, but a lifetime membership is extremely reasonable (it was $25.00 when we joined). Rick takes you fishing on the Missouri, or the Smith. If you decide to spend the night, the rooms are clean and functional. The really special things about this place are the location, the food, and Rick and Lynne. Web site: www.flyfisherinn.com.
MacKenzie River Pizza: We usually don't include chains, but the cheery staff, excellent selection of fine wines and beers and consistent attention to detail require an exception. This is our favorite place for an informal meal with friends. The location is excellent too, right on the river. The only complaint has been that the background music used to get a little too loud, but they seem to have resolved this recently.
Rikki's: Pizza and pasta and a full bar. Try the family style salad. The kids will like the selection of speciality pizza designed just for them. Great place to eat with the entire family when you just need a great place to eat. Located on the corner of 13th Ave S and 9th St.
